Ultrasonic contact lens cleaners for coloured lenses

If you wear your coloured lenses a lot, you'll know they can start to feel a bit less fresh after a while. Make up, oils from your skin and protein from your tears slowly build up on the surface, even when you're careful. That's why a few of us started using an ultrasonic contact lens cleaner, and now we wouldn't be without one.

It's a small, simple machine. You fill it with solution, pop your lenses in, press the button and it does the rest.

Each one runs a 2 minute cleaning cycle and takes 2 AAA batteries, which aren't included, so grab some when you order. They're small enough to keep on a shelf or pack in a wash bag for a long trip.

How an ultrasonic lens cleaner works

The machine sends fast vibrations through the solution. These tiny movements help loosen the bits that stick to your lenses, a bit like a mini version of the ultrasonic cleaners jewellers use. It's gentle, so it won't scratch or stretch your lenses.

It isn't a replacement for your normal routine, though. You still need to rub and rinse your lenses with fresh solution and store them in a clean case. Think of the cleaner as a deeper clean on top of that.

How we use ours

  • Wash and dry your hands, then take your lenses out and give them a quick rub and rinse.
  • Fill the chambers with fresh contact lens solution, never tap water.
  • Put each lens in its own side, close the lid and run the 2 minute cycle.
  • Rinse the lenses again and store them in a clean case with fresh solution.

We run ours twice a week. Any more than that isn't really needed, and any less and you won't notice as much difference.

Who it's handy for

It's especially good if you wear lenses with eye make up most days, as liner and mascara are usually the main culprits. Cosplayers who wear lenses at long conventions find it useful too, along with anyone who wants their 1 year lenses to feel as nice in month eleven as they did in month one. It also takes some of the effort out of cleaning if you've got long nails and find rubbing lenses fiddly.

Looking after the machine

Will a lens cleaner make my contacts last longer?
It helps keep them clean and comfy for longer, but it won't extend how long they're safe to wear. Our lenses are 1 year wear from opening. If a lens tears or feels wrong, bin it.
Can I clean other things in the lens cleaner?
We'd keep it just for contact lenses. Using it for jewellery or anything else could leave residue in the chambers that ends up on your lenses.
