From the Lensmate team

Coloured contact lenses that show on dark eyes

Most of us at Lensmate have brown eyes, so we know the disappointment of putting in a pretty lens and seeing basically nothing change. Light, sheer lenses are made to tint light eyes. On dark brown eyes they just disappear. Everything in this collection has been picked because it has enough pigment to cover dark eyes and still look like a real colour.

The trick is an opaque lens with a printed pattern that sits over your own iris. The best ones layer a few tones, darker on the outside and lighter towards the middle, so they look natural rather than painted on.

Blue contact lenses for brown eyes

Blue is the one we're asked about most, and Profound Blue Contact Lenses are our bestseller. It's an intense blue with tons of pigment, but it still looks natural. On very dark eyes it reads as a clear blue in daylight and more of a soft grey blue indoors. Bora Bora Blue is the one our repeat customers keep coming back for, and Topaz Contact Lenses have no limbal ring for a really soft, subtle blue.

If you want more of a change, Meteor Blue gives a big transformation, and Atlantic Blue, Ice Blue and Paradise Blue are lovely brighter options. Aurora Blue mixes blue and green, a bit like the northern lights.

Green and grey contacts for dark eyes

Green is harder to get right on brown eyes, as it can go muddy. Profound Green, Meadow Green and Natural Green all have a darker outer ring with a lighter centre, which keeps the green looking clean. Green Haze Eyes is brighter, and Tulip Green is a proper explosion of green if you want people to notice.

Grey is a great middle ground. Steel Grey is simple and smart, Norway Grey has a silvery finish, and Luster Grey is highly pigmented, so it shows up well even on very dark eyes. Profound Grey has cool undertones and suits fair skin.

Purple, pink and something warmer

For something fun, Dreamy Purple is a natural style purple you could wear every day, while Grape, Lunar Purple and Purple Haze Eyes are brighter. Gemstone Pink covers brown eyes with a playful pink, and the Stardust Blue, Green and Violet pairs have a little sparkle through them.

Not everyone wants a big change. Profound Brown, Meteor Brown and Mystic Brown give dark eyes a warmer, lighter brown, and Golden Hazel adds a soft golden glow.

Our tips for dark eyes

  • Pick a lens with a defined outer ring. It frames the colour and stops your own eye showing through at the edge.
  • 14.2mm looks natural. The 14.5mm pairs, like Paradise Blue and Atlantic Blue, give a slightly bigger, bolder iris.
  • Colours always look a touch deeper indoors. Check them in daylight before you decide you don't like them.
  • Brown or bronze liner makes blue and green lenses stand out more than black does.

Care and wear

All our coloured contact lenses for dark eyes are 1 year wear when you clean and store them properly. Rub and rinse in fresh solution, keep them in a clean case, never use tap water and never sleep in them. Every pair is £12.99, or try two shades with our 2 for £22.99 offer.

Coloured Contact Lenses for Dark Eyes FAQs

Do coloured contacts work on dark brown eyes?
Yes, as long as they're opaque. Sheer or enhancing lenses are made for light eyes and won't show on dark brown. Everything in this collection has enough pigment to cover dark eyes, with layered tones so the colour still looks natural.
What are the best coloured contacts for brown eyes?
Profound Blue is our bestseller and covers dark eyes really well. Bora Bora Blue, Profound Green, Luster Grey and Meteor Blue are also great picks. If you want something subtle, Topaz or Mystic Brown are lovely.
What is the most natural coloured lens for dark eyes?
Grey and soft blue tend to look the most natural on brown eyes. Topaz has no limbal ring, so the edge looks soft, and Steel Grey and Norway Grey are very easy to wear. A 14.2mm lens looks closer to a real iris than a bigger one.
Why do my coloured contacts not show up on my brown eyes?
Usually it's because the lens is an enhancing tint rather than an opaque one. Light colours with little pigment let your dark iris show through. Go for a lens made for dark eyes with a darker outer ring, and check it in daylight, as lenses look deeper indoors.
Can I get green eyes with contacts if I have brown eyes?
Yes. Profound Green, Meadow Green and Natural Green are made for dark eyes and keep the green looking clean. Tulip Green and Green Haze Eyes are brighter if you want a bigger change.
What colour contacts look best on dark skin?
Honey, hazel and warm browns look gorgeous on dark skin, and grey gives a striking contrast. Golden Hazel and Profound Brown are lovely for a natural look. For something bolder, Luster Grey or Profound Blue really stand out.
Will blue contacts look fake on brown eyes?
Not if you pick the right one. Layered blues like Profound Blue and Bora Bora Blue look much more natural than flat, single colour lenses. They'll look like a clear blue in daylight and a softer grey blue indoors, which is part of what makes them look real.
Are coloured contact lenses for dark eyes safe?
They're safe when they're CE certified and you look after them. Wash and dry your hands, use fresh solution every time, never tap water and never sleep in them. Take them out if they sting. If you've got eye problems, chat to an optician first.
How long do coloured contacts for dark eyes last?
All the lenses in this collection are 1 year wear from when you first open them, as long as you clean and store them properly. Rub and rinse after each wear and store them in a clean case with fresh solution.
Do I need a prescription for coloured contacts in the UK?
Not for ours. They're non-prescription (0.00 power) and purely cosmetic. They won't correct your sight, and you can't wear them over normal contacts. If you need vision correction, have a chat with your optician.
