Blackout and sclera contact lenses, explained

These are the lenses that get the biggest reaction in photos. The colour runs right over the pupil, so there's no dark dot in the middle, and the eye just looks solid. Possessed, blind, demonic, whatever you're going for, nothing else gives quite the same effect.

We want to be really upfront about one thing. Because the pupil is covered, these lenses block or blur your vision. They're for photoshoots, filming and standing still for the camera. Not for driving, stairs, or wandering round a busy Halloween party.

Are these real sclera lenses?

Proper full sclera lenses are huge, around 22mm, and cover the whole white of the eye. Ours are 14mm to 14.5mm, so they cover the iris and a bit around it, in a sclera style. It still looks very dramatic in photos, especially with shading around the eyes, and they're much easier to put in than a giant lens. We'd rather tell you that now than have you expect something else.

Black sclera lenses and blind white lenses

The Black Sclera Contact Lenses are a full blackout in solid black. Brilliant for demons, possession and that Supernatural style black eye. The Blind White Sclera Contact Lenses are the opposite, all white with no pupil, which works for ghosts, blind characters, Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas or a Corpse Bride look.

Our tip for white lenses is to add a bit of grey or purple shadow under the eyes. Against pale skin, a white lens can disappear. A little darkness around it makes it pop.

Mesh sclera lenses

If you want the effect but need some vision, mesh lenses are a middle ground. The White Mesh Sclera Contact Lenses, Red Mesh Sclera Contact Lenses and Blue Mesh Sclera Contact Lenses have a fine mesh pattern over the centre, so you get partial vision through it. It's a bit like looking through a net curtain. Better than a solid blackout, but still not something to drive in. The Red Manson Mesh Contact Lenses are denser, so treat those as blocked vision.

Demon Slayer blackout lenses

For anime fans, the Daki Demon Slayer Sclera Contact Lenses and Kyōjurō Rengoku Demon Slayer Contact Lenses are in here too, along with Doma and Akaza. Great for your hero shots at a con, then swap to a clear pupil lens for the rest of the day.

One thing we always do: put blackout lenses in last, once your make up, wig and outfit are all sorted. You won't be able to see the mirror properly afterwards, so it saves a lot of faff.

Look after these like any lens. Clean, dry hands, fresh solution, never tap water and never sleep in them. Keep a friend close by while you're wearing them, and take them out if they feel uncomfortable.

Blackout Contact Lenses FAQs

Can you see through blackout contact lenses?
Not properly. Blackout lenses have no clear pupil, so the colour covers the part you see through. Most people get a dim, blurry view at best. That's why we say they're for photos and posing only. Keep a friend nearby and don't drive, use stairs or walk about busy places while wearing them.
Can you see through sclera lenses?
It depends on the design. Solid sclera styles like Black Sclera and Blind White Sclera block your vision. Mesh sclera lenses have a fine pattern over the pupil, so you can see through them a little, like looking through a net curtain. Even then, your vision won't be normal, so plan around it.
Are sclera contact lenses safe?
Ours are CE certified and non-prescription, and they're safe for short wear when you look after them. The main risk is not being able to see where you're going, so treat them as a photo lens. Clean hands, fresh solution, no tap water, don't sleep in them and take them out if they sting.
How big are your sclera lenses?
Our sclera style lenses are 14mm to 14.5mm. True full sclera lenses are around 22mm and cover the whole white of the eye. Ours cover the iris and a little more, so they're easier to handle and still look very dramatic in photos. We'd always rather be honest about the size.
What are blind contact lenses?
Blind contact lenses are white or very pale lenses with no visible pupil. They make the eye look blind or ghostly. Our Blind White Sclera Contact Lenses cover the pupil, so your own vision is blocked while you wear them. They're great for ghosts, zombies and characters like Sally.
What's the difference between mesh and blackout lenses?
A blackout lens is solid colour over the pupil, so you can't really see. A mesh lens has a fine see-through pattern over the centre, so you get partial vision. Mesh looks almost as creepy in photos and is a bit easier to manage, but neither is suitable for driving or busy events.
How long can I wear blackout lenses for?
Keep wear time short, mainly because you can't see properly. Put them in for the photos or the bit of the night you need them, then swap them out. Most people wear them for an hour or two at a time. Never sleep in them, and take them out straight away if your eyes feel sore.
Do blackout contacts work on dark eyes?
Yes. Because the colour is solid and covers the pupil, your natural eye colour doesn't show through at all. Black, white and red blackout lenses look the same on brown eyes as they do on blue eyes. That's one of the reasons they photograph so well.
What are the best lenses for a possessed or demon look?
Black Sclera Contact Lenses are the classic choice for possession and demons. Shade around the eyes with grey or black shadow and leave the rest of your face pale. For a more fiery demon, the Red Mesh Sclera Contact Lenses give a glowing red look with some vision through the mesh.
How long do sclera lenses last?
Our blackout and sclera style lenses are 1 year wear once you open them, as long as you clean and store them properly. Rub and rinse with fresh solution after every use and keep them in a clean case. Because you won't wear them every day, a pair can last many Halloweens within that year.
