A sugar skull face is one of our favourite looks to do. The white base, the flowers, the swirls on the cheeks and the stitched lips take ages, and the eyes are what tie it all together. Normal eyes in the middle of all that detail can look a bit lost. Day of the Dead contact lenses make them part of the design.

Día de los Muertos is celebrated on 1 and 2 November, so it sits right after Halloween, and loads of people wear a Catrina look for both. Everything in this collection works for either.

Black contact lenses for a sugar skull

The classic La Catrina look uses dark, hollow eyes that match the black circles painted round them. Black Round Contact Lenses make your eyes look like big dark pools, and they're 14.5mm, so they look a bit larger too. Super Black Contact Lenses go further at 16mm, which makes the eye look noticeably bigger.

Space Black is a slightly different, statement black, and Glowing Black has a slight luminous effect in the dark, which is great for evening parades and parties. The Wednesday Contact Lenses are darkest at the edge and fade towards the middle, which gives a softer, gothic version.

White and Manson lenses

For something spookier, White Manson Contact Lenses have a white centre with a black outer ring, and they look brilliant against a white painted face. Zombie and White Zombie lenses give a pale, washed out stare. Black and White Contact Lenses are half black and half white, which is fab if your make up is split down the middle.

Red, orange and yellow

Day of the Dead looks are full of colour, so don't feel you have to stick to black. Flaming Sun and Fireball bring fiery orange that matches marigold flowers in a crown. Flame Red, Bullseye Red, Block Red and Red Manson are bold reds that pick up red roses or lips. Twilight Bella Red is a deep red too, and Blood Splatter Yellow adds a creepier edge.

Can you see in them?

Most of these have a clear pupil, so you can see normally. The Black Sclera Contact Lenses don't. They're a full blackout design with no pupil hole, so they block your vision. They're 14mm, so they cover the iris rather than the whole white of the eye. Keep them for photos, not parades, stairs or driving.

Our tips for the look

• Put your lenses in before you start your face paint, so nothing gets in your eyes.
• Paint your black eye circles slightly bigger than your eye. It makes dark lenses look even deeper.
• Pick one accent colour, like orange or red, and match your lenses to your flowers.
• Take your lenses out before you remove your make up, then cleanse.
