Help & info

Coloured contact lens FAQs

Everything people ask us about coloured contact lenses, from picking a colour that shows on dark eyes to cleaning, delivery and returns. Can't see your question? Just ask us.

Choosing your lenses

Will coloured contact lenses show up on dark brown eyes?

Yes, as long as you pick an opaque lens. Opaque lenses have enough pigment to cover dark brown eyes, so the colour shows properly instead of blending in. Look for "Covers dark eyes" in the lens details, or browse our coloured contact lenses for dark eyes.

What's the difference between opaque and enhancing lenses?

Opaque lenses cover your natural eye colour, so they work on any eye colour, including very dark brown. Enhancing lenses are more see-through and blend with your own colour, so they look best on light eyes like blue, green, grey or light hazel. On dark eyes an enhancing lens will look much more muted.

Which colour should I choose?

If you want something that could pass as your own eye colour, hazel, brown, grey and softer blues and greens are a good place to start. If you want people to notice, go for a brighter blue, green or one of our bolder shades. Not sure? Try our shade finder, or have a look at the real customer photos on each product page.

What size lens should I pick?

Our lenses come in a few sizes. 14.0 to 14.2mm is a natural size, close to your own iris. 14.4 to 14.6mm makes the iris look a little bigger and brighter. 16mm is extra big and is mostly used for cosplay and special effect looks. You can filter by size on any collection page.

Will the lenses affect my vision?

Most of our lenses have a clear pupil, so you see as normal. Some special effect styles, like blackout, blind and some sclera lenses, cover the pupil and will block or blur your vision. Keep those for photos and posing, not for driving or busy places. The lens details on each product page tell you which type it is.

Do you sell prescription lenses?

No. All of our lenses are 0.00 power, so they change how your eyes look but don't correct your sight. If you normally wear glasses, you can wear them over the top.

What's in the box?

Each box has 1 pair (2 lenses) sealed in sterile saline solution. You'll also need a lens case and contact lens solution to store them once opened. You can grab both in our contact lens accessories.

Wearing and care

How long do the lenses last?

All of our lenses are yearly wear, so a pair can be worn for up to 12 months once opened, as long as you clean and store them properly. Once 12 months have passed, throw them away and start a fresh pair.

How do I put them in and take them out?

Wash and dry your hands first. Place the lens on the tip of your finger, check it isn't inside out, hold your top and bottom lids open and look up as you place the lens on your eye. To take it out, look up, slide the lens down and gently pinch it off. If you find it fiddly, our applicator and remover tool makes it easier.

How do I clean and store them?

Every time you take them out, rub and rinse each lens with fresh contact lens solution, then store them in a clean case filled with fresh solution. Never use tap water, and never top up old solution. Rinse the case and let it air dry, and swap it for a new one every few months. Our contact lens solution and lens cases have you covered.

Can I sleep, swim or shower in my lenses?

No. Always take your lenses out before sleeping, swimming or showering. Water can carry bacteria onto the lens, and sleeping in them stops your eyes getting the oxygen they need.

Can I share my lenses with a friend?

Please don't. Lenses should only ever be worn by one person, even if you clean them in between.

What should I do if my eyes feel sore?

Take the lenses out straight away. If your eyes still feel sore, look red or your vision is blurry, see an optician. If you have any eye conditions, it's worth a quick chat with your optician before trying coloured lenses.

Are your lenses safe?

Our lenses are CE marked, and you'll find this in the lens details on each product page. Like any contact lens, they're safe when you look after them properly: clean hands, fresh solution, a clean case, and never sleeping in them. You can read our full safety advice on any lens page under the Safety tab.

Prices and paying

How does the multi-buy offer work?

Mix and match any lenses: 2 pairs for £22.99 or 3 pairs for £31.99. The discount is added automatically in your bag, no code needed. Three pairs also takes you over £30, so UK delivery is free too.

Can I pay with Klarna?

Yes. Choose Klarna at checkout to pay in 3 interest-free instalments. There's more on our Klarna page.

Returns and refunds

Can I return my lenses?

Yes, you have 30 days after receiving your order to ask for a return. Items need to be unopened, unused and in their original packaging, with proof of purchase, so we can't take back lenses that have been opened. To start a return, email us at hello@lensmate.co.uk.

What if my order arrives damaged or wrong?

Please check your order when it arrives and contact us straight away if anything is damaged, faulty or not what you ordered, and we'll put it right.

How long do refunds take?

Once we've received and checked your return, we'll let you know if it's approved. Approved refunds go back to your original payment method within 10 business days, though your bank may take a little longer to show it. Read our full refund policy.
